To become an RMFT, you must have at least a qualifying master's degree and acquire the necessary clinical experience and supervisory training. A bachelor's degree in various disciplines such as psychology, social work or nursing is often accepted as an admission requirement for a master's degree in marriage/marital and family therapy (see below).

If you decide to pursue a career in marriage/marriage and family therapy after earning a master's degree in a related discipline, you may achieve RMFT status provided you have earned a qualifying degree and additional required courses in marriage/marriage and family therapy prove .

University of Calgary

Professional Certificate in Couple and Family Therapy, Level 1 and 2

Professional Marriage and Family Therapy (CFT) Certificates and Diplomas (Levels 1-2) offer professionals with master's degrees in multiple disciplines (e.g., social work, nursing, psychology, counseling, public health, ministry/theology, education) or Degrees in law or family medicine or psychiatry with advanced practical skills in working with couples and families. Professional certificates and the CFT Diploma give professionals access to professional development in an area unavailable in Alberta for many years.

The program is offered online with a social service perspective to help families dealing with and/or neglected various stressors (e.g., unemployment, trauma, substance abuse, childhood diagnoses/difficulties, parenting, custody issues).

The Level 1 and Level 2 certificates each consist of four courses and are prerequisites for the Diploma, which is a 350-hour supervised internship.

In order to be admitted to the couple and family therapy diploma, certificate levels 1 and 2 must have been completed within the last 4 years.

After completing the 350-hour supervised internship, students receive the Diploma in Couple and Family Therapy. The compulsory lessons are completed in the enrollment semesters (e.g. autumn/winter, spring/summer).

Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy

The University of Winnipeg's Master of Marriage and Family Therapy (MMFT) program offers a clinical master's degree for those desiring a quality professional training program. and consists of a total of 63 SWS (24 SWS 4 internships and 39 SWS courses). Most students complete the program in 4 to 6 years and take 1 to 2 years of academic classes before moving on to an internship. In extenuating circumstances, when part-time study is not possible, the program can be adapted to the need for full-time study (3 years). Students are required to complete 500 face-to-face clinical hours, including 250 with couples and families. Internships are offered to students because the program maintains relationships with many accredited internship agencies and supervisors in the Winnipeg area.

Masters in Couple and Family Therapy

The University of Guelph's Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition's Graduate Program in Marriage and Family Therapy is an intensive program that combines academic coursework and clinical training. Masters in Counseling and Spirituality in Couple and Family Therapy

The two-year Master of Counseling and Spirituality in Marriage and Family Therapy Program at Saint Paul's University in Ottawa allows a student to enter the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and provides them with the foundational work to become an RMFT member to become Canadian Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (CAMFT).

1) Requirements for Admission to the Saint Paul University Master of Arts in Counseling and Spirituality: Individual and Couples and Families Program:

  1. an honors degree or equivalent;
  2. 12 credits in college-level theology or spirituality;
  3. 48 credits in psychology, sociology, social work, health sciences, theology, or related fields including but not limited to animation, social communication, missiology, or conflict studies

Advanced training in couple and family counseling

Admission Requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Marriage and Family Counseling at Saint Paul University:

  1. Have an honors degree or major in a related discipline, such as B. Counselling, spirituality, practical theology, health, psychology, social work, pastoral studies or any discipline deemed equivalent;
  2. Completion of a total of 24 credits in psychology and sociology;
  3. Completion of 6 credits in theology or religious studies or an equivalent subject*;
  4. Completion of counseling training with clinical experience (at least 120 hours of direct, personal, supervised contact with clients);
  5. Average at least 70% (B)

The Master of Divinity in Counseling program is designed to prepare graduates for employment in clinical counseling or church ministry.
